Therapists for college students near 94305
Adjusting to college can be overwhelming. Even though this is a life event that is planned, it can still be a culture shock for many. Making new friends, adjusting to a different type of structure, and being away from family and loved ones for the first time can increase feelings of anxiety. You might find yourself over-analyzing your social interactions with your peers in a way that you didn't do with your childhood friends whom you've known for the majority of your life, or maybe you are having a hard time managing your class schedule and assignments when school came easy to you in the past. Whatever may be coming up for you, I am here to support you. We will work together to develop helpful coping skills to manage feelings of stress and anxiety, calm the negative self-talk that often comes with increased stress, and process your recent life transition in order to feel more at ease with the change. My approach is warm, casual, and strength-based. I use gentle and validating conversation to help improve your confidence, challenge your inner-critic when it tries to take over, and make you feel empowered to take your anxiety head-on. Finding a therapist and making the initial step to start therapy can be intimidating and overwhelming. I invite you to contact me for a free initial consultation so I can answer your questions, address any worries or concerns about therapy, and ensure my therapy style is what you are looking for.
I work best with the misfits: geeks & nerds, punks, skaters, artists, musicians, writers, and activists. . . those who "rage against the dying of the light." My area of expertise consists in helping with difficulties in social relationships. Such difficulties include finding and sustaining healthy intimacy, healing from a painful break-up or divorce, school-related problems, recovering from major loss, and growing up in difficult circumstances. I am particularly suited to helping those who have cultivated their intellects and creativity but would now like to develop a greater awareness of their emotional world. Psychoanalytic thought informs my approach, but I'm far from being the silent, blank therapist. I think the psychoanalytic tradition provides the richest and most sophisticated exploration of how we love, work, and play.
My perspective on wellness involves the whole person. The approach I take may involve the realms of physical, psychological, emotional, and social wellness, not just the alleviation of symptoms. We, as a team will work together to ensure your goals are met. Modalities towards wellness may expand beyond the office, to include being surrounded by nature, incorporating exercise, or facing new fears together. Always, with your success in mind. I work with children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples. I also conduct psychological evaluations and ADHD evaluations that may help to uncover issues and guide treatment. I am a Certified ADHD Professional, and have specialities in the areas of anxiety, sports performance, and I am also a certified personal trainer. Being born and raised in Hawaii, I value aloha and family. Whether you or someone you love may be going through a difficult time, I am here to help and will welcome you with open arms, just as I would my own family. I look forward to the opportunity to speak with you!

We use treatments that have proven efficacy whenever possible and are committed to staying abreast of the latest research in the field. Our director, Dr. Julie Trim, served as Director of the UCSD Adult Eating Disorders program for 11+ years and is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at UCSD. Dr. Trim has directly supervised countless psychology trainees, publishes in scientific journals, gives presentations and trainings, and holds leadership positions in professional organizations. We have extensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and are proud to provide adherent individual DBT, DBT skills groups, and phone coaching. We also provide evidence-based ED treatment, and offer meal support at Gravity Heights (an award-winning restaurant next to our office) for clients who need nutritional support or help with food exposures. While we all try to savor the goodness in life, it's not always easy. There are so many stressors that we face in today's world, so many competing demands. Things that you used to do easily may now be hard, or things others do easily may feel impossible. Whether it's a long-standing problem or a bump in the road, getting professional help can be life-changing.
Recognizing the need for help is challenging enough; finding the right and best clinician should be simple and straightforward. Regardless of who I am working with, my primary focus is on improving self-esteem, building self-confidence and working to enrich my patients self-worth. Between the 2:00 AM study sessions, the constant pressure to have your life figured out, and the exhaustion of keeping up a 'perfect' digital presence, it’s a lot. If you’re feeling like you’re just vibrating with anxiety or running on manual mode, I see you. I’m Dr. Tinai James, and I help students navigate the messy, non-linear transition of college. My office (and my screen) is a zero-judgment zone where we ditch the clinical "therapist-speak." Whether you're dealing with burnout, relationship drama, or just trying to figure out who you actually are outside of your GPA, let's figure it out together. No couch required—just real talk and actual tools.

I specialize in working at the intersection of queerness, neurodivergence, and trauma. I am passionate about working with those who belong to the LGBTQIA2S+ and neurodivergent communities, parents, military/veterans, and those with complex trauma. I lead a queer- and neuro-affirming practice. Many of my clients are trans/non-binary, Autistic, ADHDers, and trauma survivors. I currently see adults, adolescents aged 13 and older, and families and partners, including those in polyamorous/CNM relationships. I know you are the expert on yourself; my role is to hold space, offer tools, and be a guide for your healing journey. I use a combination of evidence-based trauma therapies, yoga/mindfulness, and an understanding of your body's response to trauma. I strive to be aware of the impact of systemic oppression and marginalization on holistic health. I use authenticity, creativity, compassion, and humor to create a space where you can feel connection and validation. My goal is to help you feel comfortable getting a little uncomfortable, in order to move into an experience of healing. I am committed to creating a compassionate, nonjudgmental space for our relationship, where you can engage in self-inquiry and healing in mind and body. I'm always engaging in continued learning so that I can provide the most informed and updated support for you. I look forward to hearing from you and working together!

"What am I doing with my life?" "What do I want?" "Why do I feel the way I do?" "When will the time come that I feel how I want to feel?" "How do I get there?" These questions and many more like them can really come up as we enter into and move through our young adult years. And they can feel quite overwhelming, especially when we feel we are asking them alone. I partner with young adults to tackle these questions together. I am enthusiastic, I feel deeply, and I believe in the power of humor - these are core to who I am as a person and core to who I am as a therapist. My approach is very interactive; I bring my full self into the room, and invite clients to do the same as we work together to get them to the way of being they are seeking. I am passionate about working with young adult At the beginning of working with someone new, emphasis in placed on getting clear about what it is they are seeking and then collaborating with them to decide the pace and direction we go. Feel free to learn more about me and my work at www.adamcohenmft.com and contact me with any questions or to schedule a complimentary phone consultation to explore working together.
