Inevitably, life presents difficulties, and can be challenging for many different reasons. Sometimes the things that bring people to therapy are very specific: perhaps a major life transition has become overwhelming, or certain patterns within a relationship are starting to take a toll. Pressures in some particular setting, whether it is at school, at work, or at home, may be feeling too difficult to navigate alone. Other times, people come to therapy a little less certain, feeling confused and unsure about where their life is headed, wanting something more. It’s not always easy to answer the question, “What brings you here?” People tend to doubt their inner strengths, and don’t quite realize how many resources they in fact possess. I have found that, though conversation with a trusted person, people can more easily identify and then build on those strengths. In my work with children, we often talk about expanding their “toolbox,” so that they have the skills to better manage overwhelming emotions and navigate complicated social situations. With teenagers and young adults, we often find ourselves talking about questions of identity development - the process of learning about who we are, how we got there, and what we want for ourselves moving forward. I see growth and development as a lifetime process, and, in my work with adults, we address all these issues in increasingly varied and complex ways, while also working together to navigate complex challenges presented by a world that can be arbitrary and unfair. My past experiences, doing individual and family therapy with people of all ages, of diverse backgrounds, and difficult, sometimes traumatic histories and life circumstances, have engendered within me a core belief that with the right support and collaboration, it is possible to make meaningful and long-lasting changes.

Sometimes pain is overwhelming, especially as a young adult. You might be feeling sad, worried, or like no one else in the world understands. Maybe you are struggling in school or work, or having a hard time making friends. Or maybe you are in a difficult family situation, or are completely overwhelmed by what you want your future to be like. Regardless of where your pain is from, you may be noticing things like withdrawing from others or even physically harming yourself because you haven’t found better ways to cope with your feelings. Or maybe you’ve just noticed that you’re having more anxiety or sadness than usual. However you are experiencing your pain right now, I welcome the opportunity to work with you to form new patterns and explore the pain that lies underneath your current ones. Difficulties in life sometimes can’t be avoided, but you don’t have to face them alone. If we work together, you will have the opportunity to explore your thoughts and emotions in a caring atmosphere. We can think together about what might best help you work through the difficulties you are facing so that you can begin creating a life for yourself that is both enjoyable and fulfilling. I like to find creative ways to help you express your thoughts and what you need. For some people that can be talking about thoughts and feelings directly and learning about coping skills, but it can also include artwork or even finding memes that resonate with you. One of my goals is to use what you already enjoy and find helpful to personalize our work to fit you. My sessions are feedback-informed. During our first session, we will talk about which approaches might work best for you and talk about what our future sessions might look like. Throughout our work together, we will check in about what is working well and what changes you might want to make to help our time to feel more effective and supportive. I invite you to explore my website for more information on working with me as well as my background and training. I welcome you contacting me with questions or to talk about if I might be a good fit to work with you.

As former Director of Behavioral Medicine at Mass General North, Children's Hospital in Salem, MA, I have over 20 years working with problems such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, stress related problems (including GI distress and headaches), self-injurious behavior, and anxiety. I specialize in treating young adults with these issues. I am well trained in effective techniques (tools) from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness based therapies, dialectial behavior therapy (DBT), yoga therapy, and relaxation training to create a fluid treatment that is tailored to the individual(s). I have worked with people of all backgrounds but I generally work with women and the LGBT community. I work with clients on self-esteem, body positivity, anxiety management, trauma symptoms, and relational issues. As a human and a provider, I am feminist, anti-racist, fat positive, sex positive, pro-science, pro-vaccine, and pro-LGBT. My approach is varied depending on the individual's history with treatment. For people new to therapy, it may be helpful to utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. CBT involves looking at thoughts patterns and behaviors that may be creating obstacles in your life and setting up appropriate coping skills to address those issues. For people who come to therapy for the purpose of processing trauma, a trauma-informed, relational approach is necessary. For people who are looking to gain understanding about how their past intersects with their present behaviors, insight oriented therapy would be the best approach. I am not a "Listen and Nod" therapist. I will actively listen, provide you with feedback and analysis, and be open with you about your diagnosis, prognosis, and any treatments indicated. With full transparency, I say that I am not a validation-only therapist. Some folks want a therapist who will listen and validate without providing feedback or analysis. That is not my style. I will, however, work with you to figure out exactly how you can benefit from therapy.

Hi, I'm Shani! I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Massachusetts and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in Maine. My clients come to me for support with a number of concerns including: major life transitions including coming out, grief, transitioning to adulthood, or shifting family dynamics. They may also be working through identity exploration, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, anxiety, or struggling with managing the constant heaviness of the world. My clients tend to be insight-oriented and motivated to engage in the therapeutic process. My style is warm, non-judgmental, patient, and highly attentive to issues of social justice. I practice with sex-positive, body-positive lenses and actively work to incorporate values of decolonization and anti-racism. I am deeply committed to supporting members of my LGBTQIA+ community and our allies and I believe strongly that immigrants strengthen our communities. When clients first start therapy, I take great care to establish a counseling space where they feel safe, supported, respected, seen, and heard regardless of background. I want our time together to be something that clients look forward to and believe the quality of the client-counselor relationship sets the foundation for the work that we will do together. When you’re ready, I’m here to help. Even if you don't fully believe it yourself just yet, I know that things can - and will - get better, and I am so looking forward to working with you.

Being a university student can be both an exciting and extremely overwhelming time in your life. Your college years are full of transitions which often come with a sense of uncertainty. Seeking support in therapy can be the first step to re-gaining a sense of control and a hope in the possibility of change. My clients often face challenges related to life transitions in employment, relationships, family life, and education. They also seek support in navigating the daily struggles of life, from the stress of media consumption to confronting the debilitating impacts of oppressive systems. I also work with clients facing existential dread, including death anxiety, as well as those dealing with illness, end-of-life issues, and bereavement, whether personally or supporting a loved one. My therapeutic style is open, empathic, and down to earth. Building a safe and trusting connection is a crucial piece of the therapy process. My approach is existential and highly relational, highlighting the importance of both the right "fit" in the therapeutic relationship and exploring how you fit into the world. Through my years of practice, I've seen how self-compassion, deep connection, and finding a sense of purpose contribute significantly to one's well-being. I will support you in your search for greater meaning, emotional awareness and empowerment in a world that can be overwhelming and isolating.

Managing OCD, anxiety, and/or depression on top of the demands of work, school, social responsibilities, family responsibilities, or even leisure time is exhausting. It takes so much time and energy to deal with anxiety and takes you away from the things you care about. You deserve to feel better and do more than just try to get through your day. I strive to create a safe and comfortable environment and work collaboratively with you in an empathic manner using evidence-based treatment, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (or exposure and response prevention for OCD). Finding a therapist who fits what you are looking for can be a challenging experience. I admire your bravery in taking this first step. If you have questions about my practice, background, or approach we can set up a call to discuss if it would be a good fit.
