Therapists for college students near Duke University
Greetings. After careers in environmental justice & stewardship and wilderness therapy, I find I still work best with clients in outdoor settings. Therefore I see most people outdoors on a private property in Weaverville, NC. I enjoy working with college age people as they explore themselves through the vehicles of their passions and relationships. Please feel free to explore my website for more information about me, and you can reach out to contact me at stas@forestlightcounseling.com to explore if we might be a good working fit.
I’m a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA) offering virtual sessions to all residents in NC and in-person on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Raleigh. I work with adults (18+) who are navigating anxiety disorders, neurodivergence, relationships, and trauma. My approach is client-centered, emphasizing authenticity and empathetic understanding, mixed in with a variety of skills tailored to fit your needs. I particularly enjoy working with young adults who are trying to figure out who they are away from all the external pressures and influences. I believe in building a trusting and genuine therapeutic relationship with my clients, working together as a team to navigate life’s ups, downs, and everything in-between. I’m committed to providing an empowering, trauma-informed, LGBTQ+ affirming, anti-racist, pro-equality space where everyone feels seen, valued, and heard.
Our team works with people located in both Connecticut and Massachusetts, and specializes in work with college students and young adults. If you are struggling with overwhelm during the college experience, or managing emotional challenges such as anxiety or depression, our practice can help. We also help support students struggling with transitions, life decisions, social stress and the other challenges of the college years. We would be honored to meet you and support you through this time!
You might look like you have it all together on the outside, but feel overwhelmed, stuck, or constantly in your own head. Maybe you overthink everything or second guess yourself more than you'd like to admit. Does that sound familiar? Therapy with me is a place to be real, sort through what's going on, and start making meaningful changes (at a pace that actually feels manageable). We'll work towards a clearer understanding of yourself, more confidence in your decisions, and a greater sense of balance moving forward. It doesn't have to feel heavy all the time - we can bring honesty and even a little humor into the process. I specialize in anxiety, life transitions, and self-esteem using a CBT and trauma-informed approach. My work focuses on helping you understand patterns, build practical coping skills, navigate challenges more effectively, and create meaningful, lasting change. Therapy with me is supportive, collaborative, and real. Starting therapy can feel intimidating, and you don't have to have it all figured out (no one really does - not even me). If you are feeling overwhelmed or stuck, you're not alone. You don't need the "perfect" reason to start therapy - just showing up is enough. I'd love to connect and offer a space where you can be open and feel heard.

The App State Psychology Clinic is a community-based training clinic dedicated to providing comprehensive psychological services to High Country residents and Appalachian State University students at an affordable cost. We take several insurance plans and offer a sliding scale. We offer therapy in-person in Boone, NC as well as online. We also conduct comprehensive assessments in-person. We see youth as young as 4 years old for PCIT (behavioral concerns), and for individual therapy and assessment starting at 7 years old through adulthood.
I am a cancer survivor, an active duty military spouse, and a child of grief after losing my father at a young age to addiction. Building resilience and fostering hope is not just something that I practice professionally, I have lived it. These experiences combined with my clinical background have given me a unique perspective on healing. I value the realness of showing up as yourself in and out of the therapy room. When I am not wearing my therapist “hat” you can find me at the movies, cuddled up on the couch with my two fur babies, or in the kitchen. I am a serious foodie, dog mama, bookworm, Bravo-binge-watcher, coffee fiend, and yes….I am a millennial. I love to paint, listen to 90s country, decorate for the holidays, and travel (when I can!).
A lot of the students I work with are used to being the “put together” one. The responsible one. The one who pushes through. But behind the scenes, they’re exhausted. Many are dealing with complicated relationships with food, body image, or perfectionism while also navigating anxiety, depression, ADHD, or chronic illness. From the outside it might look like they’re managing fine, but internally it can feel like a constant battle with their own mind or body. A lot of my clients are thoughtful and self-aware, but tired of feeling stuck in the same patterns or feeling like they’re constantly fighting themselves. In therapy with me, the goal isn’t to shame or rush you into change. Instead, we slow things down and get curious about what your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are actually trying to communicate. From there, we work on building coping tools, creating more flexibility in patterns that feel rigid or overwhelming, and rebuilding trust with your body. You don’t have to come in with everything figured out. Many of my clients start therapy feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or even skeptical — and that’s completely okay. Therapy is just a space where you can show up honestly and start making sense of things at your own pace.
Sometimes, life hurts. It's scary. It's frustrating. It's complicated. It's broken. It's lonely. It's not fair. It's changing... always changing. At Getting to Happy Wellness, I'll journey with you, step by step, on your road to healing, recovery, and getting to happy. I want to honor the courage it takes to seek counseling and make sure that finances never get in the way of healing and growth. You may be seeking counseling for a wide variety of reasons, from coping with major life challenges, family and relationship conflicts, to dealing with stress, depression or anxiety, to simply desiring personal growth and greater self-awareness. I look forward to providing a safe, supportive and therapeutic space where we can collaborate and work at your own pace to help you reach your counseling and life goals. In our work together it is my hope, wish and prayer that you will feel more empowered, better understand yourself, your family, others and the world around you. Because you're worth it.
Hello all! I love to work with young adults who may be feeling lost or unsure of themselves. If you are interested in self-discovery and personal growth I am happy to help you on that journey!
Change is uncomfortable and life can be intense. Therapy is a great place to land, unpack, and regroup. If you're struggling with dealing with strong feelings, I may be able to help. I specialize in helping people deal with anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief so they can live the life they want.
You are doing the most! If it feels like there is no good news right now, that makes a lot of sense. Maybe you feel like you're tired of talking about what is bothering you and you want to start feeling better. Therapy is a safe place where you can talk about your feelings. This is a judgment-free zone and welcomes all who wish to expand their sense of self. My role is to connect with you so that you can experience your thoughts and feelings in a way that is different from how you do it at home or with your friends. I look forward to meeting you and listening to everything you have to say.
With experience working with children, adults, and couples, I offer a safe, nonjudgmental space—whether in the office or outdoors—where you can explore emotions, deepen self-awareness, and create lasting personal growth. My person-centered approach keeps your voice and your goals at the core of our work. Whether you're navigating anxiety, healing from trauma, improving relationships, or searching for direction, I’m here to support and guide you. Together, we’ll collaborate to create meaningful change at a pace and style that feels right for you.

Are you having trouble adjusting to life transitions? Are you bothered that you aren't good enough? Are you concerned that having emotionally immature parents has caused you to struggle in adulthood? Your experiences with transitions could become overwhelming, causing a lack of focus, a decrease in self-esteem, and second-guessing yourself. Imagine understanding your struggle to make changes or adapt. Imagine understanding the impact of a lack of emotional maturity or intimacy. There is a way to change these patterns in your life. You can overcome the blockage and barriers of change. I primarily use Internal Family Systems and the Change Triangle . These therapies help identify the internal attachment of faulty thoughts and emotions and help to explore ways to "detach" and live your life with purpose. Over time, you can successfully change how you think and feel about yourself and the world. I can help you understand your self-capacities by offering individual, couples, and family therapy focusing on the impact life transitions may have on your present and future inner peace and happiness.
If you are the person, everyone turns to, who do YOU turn to? You give everything to everyone else but never have time for you. It gets tiring always being the ''strong'' one. I see you. You might be struggling to get through the day or question yourself and your worth. This can look like anxiety, depression, problems recovering from a traumatic experience as an adult or as a child. I want to help you know what you DESERVE. Find the life you want and be more in control of your thoughts, emotions, and choices. Let's look inward and do this difficult but deeply important and rewarding work together. Currently, I can see clients who reside in Pennsylvania, California and North Carolina.
