I invite you to plant the next seed in your healing journey, a space where your whole self is welcome, not only the parts that learned to survive. I’m Lalo Nahui (lah-loh nah-wee) and I use they/he pronouns. I am a queer, transmasc, neurodivergent, disabled, polyamorous, first-generation Mexican therapist. My lived experience shapes how I listen, how I notice, and how I sit with you in this work we grow together. I work with college students who are tired of surviving on autopilot, balancing academics, relationships, jobs, and the expectation to always have it figured out. You might be navigating identity exploration, grief, anxiety, burnout, executive functioning or procrastination, career decisions, or the impact of carrying burdens that were never yours to carry. Maybe therapy has felt like talking without it landing in your body; together we create practices that feel embodied, creative, and practical. We slow down. We listen to your nervous system with patience, curiosity, and care. We make space for parts of you that learned to protect, perform, disappear, or endure, and we tend to them like weathered land learning to soften again. I weave somatic and nervous-system attuned practices, parts work, narrative and expressive approaches, and spiritual tools like tarot or astrology when desired. I also offer neurodivergent-informed coaching for routines, time management, and goal-setting. I center queer and trans students, QTBIPOC and students of the global majority, neurodivergent and disabled students, and first-generation and immigrant students. This work is collaborative, consent-based, and rooted in care, curiosity, and accountability. Healing moves at the pace of your body; it unfolds in cycles and seasons. Together we clarify next steps, release narratives that echo in your body, and practice returning to your full self in ways that feel real, embodied, and empowering. Virtual telehealth available in New York (Under Supervision of Andrew Triska, LCSW).
Do you find yourself stuck in patterns of procrastination and perfectionism, or at the mercy to your own self critic? Does it feel like you get caught up in moving away from negative experiences instead of moving towards meaningful ones? I am committed to helping my clients face the obstacles that get in the way of leading rich, meaningful lives. When you make the decision to attend therapy, you are making the decision to prioritize your wellbeing in a fundamentally unique way. Therapy is something that can be challenging, but also transformative– Especially for those who have not been listened to, believed, or had the freedom to pause and practice introspection due to the demands of life. Knowing the challenges of finding a therapist who can understand your life experiences, I prioritize working with communities with whom I share personal experience. This includes, but is not limited to: LGBTQIA+, polyamorous/ENM, BDSM/kink, sex worker, SA/DV survivors, neurodivergent, chronically ill & disabled communities. My work is grounded in Relational-Cultural Therapy, which emphasizes the importance of the relationship between therapist and client as an essential part of the therapeutic process. I aim to minimize power dynamics in the room between therapist and client, and firmly believe you are the expert of your life. Rather than an authority in the room, I see my role as a collaborator in helping you achieve your therapy goals. For those who wish to know my social location: I am a Black, queer, disabled, neurodivergent, polyamorous, non-binary therapist in my 30s. I come from a middle-class background in a mixed race household, am a US citizen, and was raised Catholic but am not religious. I approach therapy as a team effort grounded in trauma-informed, anti-racist, fat liberatory, sex & kink positive, and feminist ideals. My therapy practice is eclectic, borrowing from multiple modalities in order to find the best approach for each individual client, couple, or polycule. Common approaches I incorporate include: EFT (emotion focused therapy), IFS (internal family systems), Sex Therapy, and Attachment Theory. I work with clients on a variety of topics, but special interests include: Unpacking attachment wounds using IFS; Transition stages in Poly/ENM; Freedom from shame regarding sex & kink; Impacts of disability; Relationships to health, disordered eating, and/or fatness from a fat liberatory and body neutrality lens. If you are curious about working together, please email lowell@expressyourselftherapynyc.com to set up a free consultation.
I work with clients who have experienced trauma, are navigating difficult family and relationship dynamics, or are looking to better manage their anxiety, depression, or chronic stress. I have experience working with diverse client populations and the LGBTQIA+ community. We will work together to establish a treatment plan that fits your needs, and pursue it in a collaborative environment where you feel heard, supported, and affirmed.
Chronic illness impacts more than physical health; it can shape your identity, relationships, academics, and emotional wellbeing. I support college students and young adults affected by medical issues who are facing uncertainty, grief, life transitions, and stress. Whether you're navigating a new diagnosis, ongoing symptoms, caregiving responsibilities or relationship challenges, I provide a space to grapple with the emotional realities of physical illness. I have particular experience providing therapy to adults with Multiple Sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions. Other specialties include trauma, loss, depression, and relationship issues.

“When we are no longer able to change a situation… we are challenged to change ourselves.” Viktor Frankl The college experience is a journey filled with ups and downs. This period of our lives can be overwhelming, and bring up different emotions, including depression, anxiety, and loneliness. It's important to acknowledge these feelings, learn to manage and work through them so you can be your best self. I want you to know that you are not alone. I provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings freely. College is a time of self-discovery, and it's completely normal to grapple with questions about who you are and where you fit in. The academic pressures only add to the challenges you may be facing. Together, we can work towards understanding the roots of your struggles and develop coping strategies that empower you to overcome challenges. If you're ready to embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing, please reach out.
I'm so glad you've started this journey to improve your mental wellbeing. I know how difficult beginnings can be—I’ve worked with a number of first-time and returning therapy clients from backgrounds as diverse as New York City itself. I particularly enjoy working with LGBTQIA+ clients and people with disabilities and neurodivergences. I do my best to honor your cultural experience as we tackle some of life’s biggest challenges together: depression and anxiety, trauma and grief, chronic illness and medical issues, relationship difficulties and life transitions, and problematic drug use or other behaviors that may no longer be serving you. My own career began in worker organizing, then moved into community social work and social policy research. I have a deep appreciation for how relationships and social realities impact mental health and prioritize a relational and social change-oriented approach. Disability justice, racial justice, and gender justice are core tenets of my practice. My work is also influenced by my own experiences as a therapy client: I strive to be as transparent as possible about what we’re doing and why, so you can be a full partner on the journey and never feel left in the dark. Above all, I am person-centered: I start by learning who you are as an individual, your strengths and challenges, and then figure out which clinical approaches can work best for you. I often draw from Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and am pursuing further training in these modalities. I very much look forward to meeting you and taking this journey together!
It can often feel daunting and challenging to ask others for help; however, I am glad you have ended up on my page and are looking for support at this point in your life. My hope as your future therapist is to help you emerge into the best version of yourself by helping you overcome some of the internal barriers that may be impacting how you perceive yourself, others, and the world. As a therapist, I like to approach my work with clients in a collaborative, exploratory, & conversational manner. I will also remain attuned to your unique experiences and intersecting identities (e.g., race, gender, sexuality) throughout our work. I have worked with clients on a wide breadth of concerns, including (but not limited to): anxiety, depression, career concerns, relationship concerns, family of origin concerns, identity exploration/development, & interpersonal concerns. I have experience working with undergraduate & graduate students, adults, and other mental health providers. **I am in-network with Aetna (NY, MD, & VA) and Anthem (NY).** I am an out-of-network provider for all other insurances. If you have out-of-network benefits, your insurance often will cover a large percentage of the session fee. I can provide a superbill for your sessions, which you can then submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. Finding a therapist with whom you feel comfortable and connected is key. Thus, I offer a complimentary phone consultation to help determine whether we might be a good match. If my approach resonates with you, please reach out. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

For over 40 years, I've worked with individuals, couples, families, & groups. From among the numerous treatment approaches in which I've trained, i custom tailor a way of working that best suits your needs. Thus, I start by listening to your concerns. Then together we can delineate goals. These can range from broad existential concerns, e.g. how you want to BE everyday, how to live "happier." . . to practical ways to improve your relationship(s), choose a career, reduce your anxiety or depression, manage your A.D.D. I work with local psychiatrists if you wish to consider, or manage, medication(s). I'm sorry but i do not accept any insurance (managed care was around when i started to practice). I'll help you find out if your insurance contract will reimburse you for an Out-of-Network (OON) Psychologist like myself. Also, since Covid, i've been working solely over Zoom. I look forward to hearing from you. Dr. Joy
My clients are often deep feelers, over thinkers, and high achievers such as students, clinicians, creatives, adoptees, BIPOC, and first generation individuals who are navigating identity, relationship dynamics, responsibilities, anxiety, depression, overwhelm, burnout, trauma, or systemic stressors. They are often masking or silencing parts of themselves to meet expectations. Many are seeking a space where they do not have to explain their identities or experiences, where they can feel heard and seen without judgment or fear. They want support, clarity, and autonomy to show up fully both in therapy and in their everyday lives. I offer unique understanding of intersectionality rooted in lived experience and aim to provide culturally and trauma-informed care. I've supported youth and families in schools, camps, and community centers facing trauma, crisis, abuse, neglect, grief, loss, immigration issues, displacement, and second language challenges for over a decade. I've trained clinicians, staff, and supervised interns in crisis intervention, SEL, and case management. With a long-standing dedication to human development, attachment theory, and a gathered knowledge of specific cases, treatments, and approaches, I am committed to client-centered care tailored to each individual's needs. I understand how overwhelming it can feel to carry so much while trying to hold it all together. I offer a compassionate, supportive space where your full self, voice, and unique form of expression are honored. If you’re looking for a space to make sense of things in your own way, you’re welcome to connect with me and discover what therapy can mean for you. I offer free 15-minute consultations, feel free to reach out and connect further via email or my official website.

If you are struggling with anxiety/stress, depression, self esteem, dating/relationships or life transitions, together, we will explore healthy, attainable changes to improve the quality of your life and relationships. I aim to help you to gain insight, self-acceptance, and learn new strategies to help you to live an empowered life. Therapy can be short-term and focused on immediate, practical solutions or long-term and focused on going deeper. When personal exploration is encouraged and supported, we decide who we are and how we want to live our lives.
