Hi! I am Dr. Monica Johnson. If you’re reading this, it means you are taking your mental and emotional health seriously and researching someone who will be a good fit for your journey. This is exciting! Let me tell you more about me to help you with your decision making process. I am a Licensed Psychologist in NYC, but some people think of me as a problem solving pro, empowerment guru, and self-compassion guide! I partner with my patients to find pathways to a better life. I work best with people who are tired of being stuck and ready to make changes. I can’t change you. Only you can do that, but I’m super excited to be your side kick on the journey and help you highlight roads to success. One of the most important things to know about me is that I am NOT a smile and nod type of therapist. I get down in the trenches with you. I’m down to earth and real with you through this process which means I will call you out on your BS and help you figure out what to do with it. We will work hard and laugh a lot. For the record, there is nothing off limits or shameful in therapy. I’ve seen it all and heard it all. If you need to talk about sex, money, medical issues, or “that one time in Amsterdam,” don’t hesitate! I work with people of all backgrounds (race, gender, sexuality, religion, alternative relationships) and you should expect that I will affirm your identity while helping you to develop a fuller self concept. My job is to help you tap into strengths you already possess (we all have them even if we can’t see them yet) and create new ones! If you are struggling with depression, anxiety, feel constantly overwhelmed by your emotions, past traumas, poor relationships, low self esteem, or just deciding what the next step is in your career/life, I can help.
I have extensive experience counseling individuals from diverse backgrounds and helping them deal with various life issues. With my multicultural training, I am able to empathize and relate to each client so that I may identify their needs and help them with the presenting issues.
I support adults navigating anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and periods of transition that may leave them feeling disconnected or unsure of their next steps. While I have a particular passion for supporting women of color, I work with clients from a variety of backgrounds who are looking to build confidence, strengthen boundaries, and create a greater sense of belonging and connection in their lives. Together, we'll help you reconnect with yourself, your values, and the relationships that matter most. I work with clients experiencing loneliness, social disconnection, or uncertainty during periods of transition. Whether you're navigating changes in relationships, adjusting to a new stage of life, or hoping to build deeper connections, we can work together to cultivate a stronger sense of belonging and create a life that feels more balanced and fulfilling. Prior to private practice, I worked with youth and families in the foster care system, an experience that deepened my appreciation for resilience, community, and the importance of supportive relationships. My therapeutic style is warm, collaborative, and client-centered. I specialize in supporting women of color navigating anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and life transitions that leave them feeling disconnected from themselves, others, or their sense of direction. I strive to create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where clients feel seen, understood, and empowered to explore their experiences with curiosity rather than criticism. I primarily draw from cognitive behavioral approaches while tailoring treatment to each client's unique experiences, values, and goals. Together, we will identify patterns that may be contributing to emotional distress, challenge ways of thinking that no longer serve you, and develop practical strategies that support meaningful, lasting change. My goal is to help clients build confidence, establish healthier boundaries, and move through life with greater clarity, self-trust, and intention.

Therapy can deepen your capacity for love, trust, and connection — with yourself and with others. I’ve seen it ease depression, anxiety, and shame; strengthen self-esteem; and help people become more resilient during life’s ups and downs. Most of all, it can bring forward a truer, more authentic self. Therapy is a collaborative process. You speak, and I listen closely — for what’s said and what lies beneath the surface — helping you see what may be getting in the way of a more fulfilling life. As Carl Rogers wrote: “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” I’ve found that to be true. Patients find it helpful to explore childhood, memories that bubble up, dreams, feelings, fears, wishes — whatever arises. Our aim is an understanding of your inner world that leads to meaningful action & choice. With couples, I help you listen more clearly & break entrenched patterns. Everyone longs to be seen and heard & I'll help you arrive at that place. As a therapist and writer, I’m inspired to help each patient take hold of their narrative — understanding where they’ve come from & where they’d like to go. As we get to know one another, I tailor my style to your personality and needs. Your feedback is always encouraged. Email me to schedule a consultation & see if we’re a good fit. I believe everyone has the inner capacity to heal, which guides my work. As an Asian American clinician, I’m passionate about culturally informed care and creating a safe space that honors each client’s identity. I work with individuals navigating PTSD, complex trauma, depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Using an eclectic, mind–body approach—including somatic therapy, CBT, DBT, and solution-focused techniques—I tailor treatment to each client’s needs.
College can feel like a constant balancing act between expectations, relationships, and the pressure to have it all figured out. I specialize in working with high-achieving individuals who look successful on the outside but privately struggle with anxiety, perfectionism, and self-doubt. Many of my clients are insightful and self-aware–they know why they feel the way they do, but that insight alone hasn’t been enough to shift how they feel. My approach focuses on helping you reconnect with your emotional experiences as valuable sources of information, not something to fix or avoid. Together, we’ll explore what’s beneath the overthinking so you can feel more grounded, confident, and emotionally resilient. Clients describe me as warm, thoughtful, and collaborative. I create a space where you can feel both deeply supported and gently challenged. If this resonates, I’d love to connect for a free consultation.
