I love working with college students. I worked exclusively with students for 14 years and have been a therapist for 19 years. I really struggled in college myself and enjoy helping students thru this challenging time. Anxiety, motivation, time and stress management are all tough during college as well as how that constant stress effects your relationships and self care and self compassion. Helping out with career and academic direction can be part of our work too. This is also a time that gender identity and sexuality and body image issues can arise. I can help support all sorts of folks (including with neurodiversity and individuals with ADHD and chronic health issues) to stay healthy and regulated during high stress.
Many of my clients come to me with emotional wounds. They often felt invisible, rejected, devalued, or deeply hurt by others. They learned to adapt to the unsupportive environment by judging themselves, tensing up, trying to control everything, disconnecting from themselves, numbing their feelings, not trusting others, hiding, or trying to please everyone. As time goes by, these strategies stop working and become symptoms we label as depression, anxiety, disordered eating, substance use, PTSD, self-harm, etc. I work with clients to break free from the past and live life in the way they want. I offer a safe space where clients feel seen, accepted and empowered. I collaborate with clients to set goals and identify/build on their strengths. I use body-based therapies (EMDR, SP, Mindfulness, etc) to help clients resolve past trauma. I incorporate ACT and DBT to help clients manage stressors more effectively and live more meaningful/fulfilling lives. As a BIPOC psychologist and bilingual immigrant, I have extensive experience serving clients with marginalized identities. You look like you have it together but inside you are exhausted, overwhelmed, or just quietly struggling in ways nobody around you seems to notice. The students I work with have often been carrying something heavy for a long time: anxiety that won't quit, a past they can't stop thinking about, or a pattern of burning out no matter how hard they try to keep up. Some are high achievers who look completely fine on the outside while feeling overwhelmed or empty on the inside. Others are navigating something that happened earlier in life that is finally surfacing now that they have space to breathe. Many of my clients have tried talking about their problems before and felt like it helped in the moment but didn't really change anything. That's because some of what we carry doesn't live in our thoughts. It lives in the nervous system, in the body, in patterns wired into the brain long before we had words for them. I use approaches, such as EMDR and IFS, that work directly with the brain and body, not just the thinking mind, which is why clients often notice real shifts after feeling stuck for years. You don't need to have it figured out before we talk. You just need to be curious about why you keep feeling the way you do, and open to the idea that something can actually shift. If you're dealing with anxiety, burnout, trauma, depression, difficult relationships, or a general sense that something is off and you can't quite name it, you are probably in the right place.
My clients are exhausted and overwhelmed like you. They are tired of doing their best to keep all these balls (school, work, parenting, relationships, self-care, health and wellbeing, sleep + more) up in the air (even though admittedly they are pretty darn good at it). But when they inevitably drop a few because something else pops up or they get tired, life feels messy and they are quick to place judgements on themselves. My clients are expert problem solvers and doers, who in the face of stress, just keep going. Some are the type of person who the people in their life lean on for support. Some have tried a number of ways to fix or problem solve their way our of their emotions or exhaustion. They find their coping to work for a little bit but aren't moving them towards the life they imagined for themselves. Some realize they aren't sure they can keep up with all of what needs to be done to feel "okay". When some of my clients do take time for themselves or the rest they need, their mind struggles with feeling guilty, worrying about what they "should" be doing for work/school/person (fill in the blank with any responsibility).
