Feeling like you need a safe space? Maybe you've felt pressured to hide parts of yourself and have struggled to connect with others, or you feel isolated and misunderstood. Perhaps your emotions feel overwhelming or difficult to manage, or it's hard to feel present when you are around other people. If you are struggling, you do not have to do it alone! I work with ADHD, autism, depression, anxiety, and trauma. It can be hard to adjust to college life and even harder to navigate if you need accommodations or are struggling with your mental health. In therapy, I can help you better understand your emotions and learn practical strategies to find relief and cope with challenges. I can also help you with paperwork if you need accommodations at school. I am licensed in New York and Oregon. I can work with you if you are in either of those states or if you travel back and forth for school and breaks.

I am a board certified clinical psychologist with extensive training in college mental health. I completed my doctoral, and post-doctoral, clinical training in counseling centers at Portland State University, Washington State University, and at the University of Washington, prior to starting my independent practice in Portland, Oregon. I specialize in helping people who may appear to others as high-functioning, high-achievers, who have it “all together.” However, too much self-control, striving, inhibition, and perfectionism can result in suffering. This overarching problem is called overcontrol and it gets in the way of people being able to relax, loosen up, enjoy relationships, try new things, and create fulfilling lives. People I work with often attempt to suppress their emotions and needs in order to achieve success in their career, college, relationships, and other life goals. They are usually achievement-oriented, detail-focused, driven, ambitious, and place high standards on themselves and others. Although their qualities may help with pushing through struggles to achieve success, limiting emotional expression can result in long-term negative effects. These effects can be chronic depression and treatment-resistant anxiety, which do not respond well to traditional forms of therapy. This means clients I work with have often been in therapy before and found it unhelpful. A treatment I offer for the above difficulties is called Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy or RO DBT. It focuses on being more open with others about who you are in order to create a meaningful life. RO DBT is a comprehensive, active treatment that focuses on learning new skills to reduce shame, feel less anxious around others, and create desired relationships. Even though RO DBT is a new type of therapy, it is based upon 20 years of research and is considered an evidence-based treatment for chronic depression, avoidant personality disorder, treatment-resistant anxiety, obsessive compulsive personality disorder, and maladaptive perfectionism. In addition to RO DBT, I also specialize in helping people change their relationship with alcohol, cannabis, and overall health behavior. I do this by using a highly supportive and empathic treatment called Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI is a well-known and well-researched therapeutic approach. It has been scientifically tested and has demonstrated its ability to be effective in changing alcohol use and other health-related behaviors. Overall, my approach is grounded in science-based and behavior therapies. Behavior therapies are different than other forms of therapy that focus on spending most of the time in session discussing your past or what you think about things you have not done yet. This is because the science shows that if you want your life to be different, you have to do something different. Therefore, the therapy I offer focuses on taking risks to try out new behavior, learning new skills to increase social connection, living more aligned with your values, and taking action that changes not just the way you think about your past, but the way you live in the present.

Hi, my name is Matthew Block and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Oregon. I typically work with teens(16+), adults, couples and Parents. I enjoy helping people work through identity development, ADHD, depression, anxiety, trauma, parenting support, and spiritual concerns. I believe people are influenced by their biological temperament, life experiences, past and present relationships with significant people, and their core values. My approach to therapy incorporates cognitive methods (examining one’s thoughts and beliefs). I view counseling as a collaborative effort in helping clients to recognize strengths, identify needs, understand conflicts, discover new options, set personal growth goals, and make informed choices. I earned my B.A. at Multnomah University and received my Masters in Counseling from Western Seminary. Prior to my current counseling practice, I worked for group practices including, Sundstrom Clinical Services, River Ridge Counseling and Northwest ADHD treatment center. My clinical training experience includes working at a residential treatment program for teens, and internships at Northwest Family Services and A New Day Counseling Center.

I utilize a collaborative approach to therapy. I may have knowledge and experience in therapeutic skills, but the client is the expert on their life and the issues they bring to therapy. It takes both of us to share our understanding to develop goals and create the change the client desires. I use strategies from a variety of different therapeutic theories, but I like to practice solution-focused strategies when possible. Sometimes we don't need to know a lot about the history of the problem to solve it. I'm a therapist with Octave and Evernorth Behavioral Care Group. Octave is a mental health practice providing high-quality care covered by multiple insurances. Evernorth Behavioral Care Group is a behavioral health provider group in-network with Cigna Healthcare and Evernorth. For my availability, please reach out to Octave’s team by emailing or calling.

I have worked in a variety of settings and with people of all ages. My style has been described as warm, collaborative, compassionate, and direct when needed. As both a therapist and a person who has received therapy, I do not hide my humanity from my clients, and value being transparent and genuine in my approach. Something you'll notice when working with me is that I often hold two seemingly conflicting ideas as true at the same time. I will both validate your experiences and challenge you to change -- always with the goal of living more congruently with your deepest-held values. I recognize that seeing a therapist can feel like a big step to take. It is the beginning of a new relationship, a change to how you have been living, and a reflection on how you got to where you are today. For all of these reasons it is normal to feel anxiety or stress about making sure you find the right fit in a counselor. I believe in approaching counseling through a holistic lens, considering the ways that your environment, work or school related stress, relationships, social systems, and traumatic or other lived experiences might affect you in the present. With these considerations, I will support you in building a greater sense of self-awareness, allowing you to develop tools to live more closely in line with your values and aspirations. I work with clients in a manner that is both sensitive and analytical. You might be coming to counseling with something very specific that you would like to work on, or you might be unsure why things are not feeling right in your life. Perhaps you are feeling like your life is not going the way you had hoped, and you are missing a sense of purpose, excitement, or connection. Maybe you are struggling to change a behavior, relationship structure, or just the way that you're feeling day to day. In all of these cases, I will support you in figuring out the best path forward. My goal is to create a compassionate, collaborative space where you can better understand your experiences, resolve internal and relational conflicts, and move toward a more authentic and fulfilling life.

We are a group practice of Registered Dietitians. Our approach is collaborative and grounded in the understanding that eating concerns often intersect with mental health, including anxiety, depression, OCD, and neurodivergence. We have a HAES (Health At Every Size) approach, are trauma-informed, and provide gender and queer affirming care. We are members of the Columbia River Eating Disorder Network and our dietitians have worked in higher levels of care for eating disorder recovery. With our training and experience, we understand how to support folks wherever they are in their recovery journey and aim to meet people where they're at. We also support folks without eating disorders who are looking for weight-inclusive nutrition counseling support for various health needs, including blood sugar management, PCOS, and eating with neurodivergence.

Welcome! Most clients who seek me out are overwhelmed. They may be dealing with life transitions like separation, divorce, single parenting, empty nesting, or career changes. They may feel alone and need help moving forward. Sometimes they are doing their best to juggle life's stresses while managing chronic illness or disability - whether that's their own autoimmune condition, their child's autism or ADHD, a partner's sudden stroke, or an aging parent's Alzheimer's. Above all, they want a personal connection with someone who believes in them and validates their feelings, experiences, and concerns. As a counselor, I offer undivided attention & nonjudgement. I listen with compassion, using curiosity & thoughtful questions to examine your concerns. Together we may use creative activities (writing, drawing, projection) to approach problems in new ways. I’ll also challenge you to take small action steps to help you meet the goals you've set for yourself. In our work together I will honor your wholeness and recognize your inherent strengths. This means that—while I will attend to the challenges you describe in session—I will also recognize your knowledge, skills, attitudes, wisdom, capabilities, community, and resiliency. You are so much more than your hardship! You can reach me by phone at 971-232-3187 or email me at wendymicheau@introspectivecollective.org.
