Going away to school, adjusting to your new adult role in life, managing various roles in your life can be exhausting and overwhelming. My ultimate goal is to create validating, non-judgmental environment to help you feel safe and comfortable. I believe in offering support, guidance and knowledge to each of my clients.I have been trained in DBT therapy to teach you skills to manage emotions, improve relationships, and modify behaviors. You can develop the healthy life you desire. Humans experience emotions! Sometimes we may think there is a right way and a wrong way to feel and distress means, we are feeling the wrong way. That is a ton of pressure! Sometimes, our emotions become distressing. Few are taught to manage emotions effectively and distress can lead to self-blame, defeated feelings, strained relationships, self-harm, and more. I WOULD BE HONORED TO HELP YOU! I believe in treating clients holistically. We are more than our mental health. We are all individuals and our experiences are unique. My clinical focus is creating an environment that is safe, unique to your personal needs, and promotes personal growth. We will work together to replace unhealthy coping with positive skills, proven to work. A LITTLE ABOUT ME I graduated with my Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology from Western Michigan University. I am a fully licensed LLP and a LPC. I have been working in the field of counseling for many years and have received instruction in the areas of Parenting, Trauma, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, CBT. and Anxiety. However, the greatest instruction I have received is the variety of experiences I have overcome, in my own life. I specialize in helping people feel empowered to take the control back of their emotions, their past, their circumstances, their relationships and ultimately their lives. I work with individuals and families from various cultural backgrounds, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and gender identity. You are reading this to decide if I have the tools to help you with whatever circumstance brought you here today. I believe I do have the tools you need. I think everyone is valuable and has the ability to learn skills to overcome their circumstances and become the person they would like to be. You are strong enough, important enough and deserving of growth and healing, and I will do my best to help you grow, heal and THRIVE in everything you encounter.

The shift from being a teenager to an adult can feel pretty overwhelming. It’s easy to feel like you’re the only one who doesn’t have everything figured out, especially when it seems like everyone else has it all together. You’re probably dealing with a lot—leaving home, becoming more independent, and figuring out how your relationships with family are changing. Feeling stuck or uncertain is normal, but it can also bring on feelings of anxiety, low self-worth, and even depression. And leaving home often opens up the space to finally face things in your family life that might have been too hard to address before. I’m here to support you through these transitions, helping you build confidence and see things in a more hopeful light. We’ll work together to set realistic goals that feel good for you, giving yourself the grace you need while creating a clear plan for what’s next. I’ll guide you to tap into your inner strength, uncover what truly matters to you, and help you access the resources you need. Through various therapeutic techniques, we’ll work on healing, managing emotions, and learning how to communicate your needs in a healthy way.

What traits must your future counselor possess? Should they make you feel heard and validated? Give you tools to succeed? If you said yes, I’m here to help! Life often throws a wrench in our plans, especially when it comes to our relationships, employment, health, finances, and the list goes on. And that’s on top of a global pandemic! It’s no wonder why depression, anxiety, and substance use are more prevalent than ever. As a cancer survivor, I understand how quickly it can feel like the walls are closing in. However, I’ve also learned ways to break free. It’s a primary reason I became a therapist: so I can help others do the same. My specialties including CBT and DBT, which focus on changing thinking and behaviors. This is achieved by building custom action plans for each of my clients. No cookie-cutter plans here! Popular areas to focus on include depression & anxiety, relationships, negative thinking, grieving, and chronic illness. We'll work on whatever is important to you. Making life-changes can be intimidating, but you won’t be going through this alone. I’ll give you hope and support, while simultaneously helping take some of life’s weight off your shoulders. I recognize committing to a full session can be daunting, which is why I offer free 15-minute phone or video consultations. Let's chat - send me a message today!

I believe that you are the master of your own life, and I believe that therapy is a joint process that we can navigate together. I am not here to judge you or tell you how you should be living. I am here to help you develop the tools and understanding needed to create the life you want and meet your long and short term goals. I have a focus centered around the LGBTQ+ community, but also specialize in working with women's issues, anxiety disorders, depression, and grief. I have worked in crisis intervention and have experience with treating substance use disorders. I utilize a mix of Cognative Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and person centered modalities to help adults who are looking for a change in their life, looking to better understand how to cope, or looking to go through their process of healing and/or recovery. I am not just a counselor, but also a peer. I am part of the LGBTQ+ community, and have struggled with an anxiety disorder and bouts of depressive symptoms throughout my life. I hope that my experiences can better help me to understand yours and allow me to be a positive asset to you in your journey to grow and heal.

Many mental health issues are related to a trauma response in the brain and body. Trauma is often conceptualized as one single event or experience that causes intense fear or distress. However, not all people who experience these kinds of events develop trauma symptoms, and many people who do experience trauma symptoms cannot identify a single event such as this. Another way to understand trauma symptoms is that they occur when an individual’s context overwhelms their nervous system’s ability to cope. This forces the nervous system to utilize strategies to try to bring the body back into balance. These strategies are usually useful or adaptive in the moment, but unhealthy and disruptive in the long run. The coping patterns can be related to addiction, disordered eating, the way we emotionally engage in relationships, or the chronic up-regulation (anxiety) or down-regulation (depression) of our nervous system. All are attempts to process the energy stored in the nervous system in response to stressors. Together we will utilize elements of mindfulness, somatic expression, Family Systems Theory, and Narrative therapy to develop new strategies to express emotion, regulate the nervous system, and communicate effectively with ourselves and with the people in our lives.

Why does insight alone, not lead to congruence between what you want and what you do? This is a question we would explore together. My areas of interest and experience include anxiety and depression, relationship difficulties, behavioral change through healthy habits, mindfulness, and exploring interpersonal struggles. We can focus on what resonates with you, work within any of life's domains where we believe change is possible, and go inward with mindfulness to sit with the parts of our realities that are beyond our control. Focusing on what we can control, however, is often the way forward.

Hi there! My name is Kimmie and I practice through Embrace Change Therapy. I believe you are the expert in your life, and I am to support you through whatever journey you may be on. There is so much that happens in life; it’s very easy to become overwhelmed. When we slow down and take it one step at a time, we are able to accomplish goals and establish new ways of thinking as well as develop a wide range of coping skills. I meet you where you are, and together we can move forward to achieve your goals! Therapy is not a one fits all, so I work from a combination of modalities, mostly CBT, strengths based, and motivational interviewing depending on clientele. I've worked with clients from a variety of backgrounds, and love to learn about each and every one as their own individual selves. My philosophy in life is that there is always room for learning and growth. I believe we both have things to offer in therapy, and can't wait to meet you! I accept most insurances, including Medicaids. Send me an email and we can verify this prior to working together. I graduated from GVSU with my Bachelor’s of Social Work and Master’s of Social work. I have two black labs, am married to my college sweetheart, and we have a toddler son who keeps us on our toes! In my free time, I love reading, taking our dogs for walks, and riding my horse, Atlas, in eventing and jumping. Feel free to shoot me an email to connect!

I believe therapy is a great way to help you turn the pain you feel today into the strength you feel tomorrow. My philosophy is simple “I help people become an expert on one subject, themselves”. We as human beings are very complex and often need help to navigate through stress, trauma, and life challenges. I witnessed first hand how therapy can change the trajectory of one’s life. I am committed to working alongside my clients to help them find their inner healing and peace. I have worked with many different cultures, genders, and people from different backgrounds.
