Therapists for college students near New York, NY
I am a New York State Licensed Creative Arts Therapist, New Mexico State Licensed Professional Art Therapist, and Nationally Board Certified Art Therapist, who offers talk therapy and art psychotherapy for adults seeking insight, personal growth and change--particularly after major life transition, grief, loss or trauma. These experiences may pertain to starting school, academic stressors, medical illness, injury, disability, relationships, loss of loved ones, job loss or instability, relocation, and certainly much more. In our sessions together we can explore issues that come up around the extreme shifts in how you know how to be in the world, your self expectations and sense of identity, feelings of confusion, and accompanying feelings of distress. We will gently address your stressors and any feelings of misunderstanding, alienation or isolation in order to ultimately foster integration, personal advocacy, individuation, and renewed inspiration for your next path forward. I will encourage you to access creative imagination through a holistic, psychodynamic, relational, transpersonal, social action, and anti-oppressive lens. This means that we will engage in deep processing discussion--alongside art, creative expression, guided visualization, mindfulness and some somatic therapy, including the option of Reiki--to help us learn more about your needs, barriers, and goals in the present and how to pivot with insight from the past. We will particularly look at the intersection of your individual mindset, conscious awareness, unconscious impulses, and psyche with the events and lived experiences you have been met with in the groups you have belonged to and the communities around you. We will also consider how each of us impacts those individuals and communities around us, and acknowledge how as we make positive change, those reverberations can aid our community in greater compassion, growth, and improvement for many others in big and small ways. You deserve to recognize, explore, nurture, and be reminded of your natural strength, resiliency, and capacity for insight, growth, and joy! While therapy may challenge you to make sense in new ways of past and current conflict, crisis, or loss, our work together will seek access to a state of calm within, and the wisdom which may be created from each and any situation: all with motivation, inspiration, acceptance, choice, and hope. Together--let's make change, and find comfort during change.
I work with students who need more or different support than they are able to access on-campus. You may be looking for long-term therapy or for a therapist who specializes in working with people like you. I am trained in several types of therapy (ACT, DBT, relational, multicultural-feminist) and apply them flexibly based on what you need. Students who work with me are often looking for longer-term therapy, where we address deeper issues in a safe relationship, at your own pace. Others are seeking individual therapy that makes room for activism and the big problems of our time. We may be a good fit for therapy together if you are coping with a difficult family, relationship trouble, recurrent mental health problems (e.g. BPD, PTSD, MDD, GAD), or a life transition (e.g. grief, divorce, pregnancy, moving, spiritual/religious crisis). I also have particular experience working with medical students. Finally, I am a climate-aware and social justice-focused therapist; this means your experience with collective problems like white supremacy and the climate crisis is a welcome, respected, and important part of therapy. I don't take insurance, but I offer sliding scale fees based on financial need. Please reach out to me for a 15-minute phone call to see what might be possible in our work together!

I work collaboratively with students who face a variety of challenges, including life transitions, relationship issues, and navigating queer identities. College and graduate school typically occur at pivotal developmental points for people in terms of figuring out who they are, what they want, and separating/individuating from parental figures. Together, we will work to understand your inner life, what works and what doesn't in terms of your thinking, behavior and ways of relating to others. Often, patterns develop that help us stay safe and secure when we're young, but would benefit from re-examination and modification to live a more fulfilling adult life. I have a sub-specialty working with people with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), a highly distressing fixation on a perceived appearance defect that can impact daily functioning and quality of life. I help you understand where the appearance fixation originated, including negative self appraisals and rituals/compulsions that accompany BDD. Learning to face feared and avoided situations is a gradual process that takes place over time, freeing you from the hold of BDD and leading to improved functioning and a more satisfying life.

As a young adult, holding your own emotional space—especially with family—is a powerful way to support your mental health. Your 20s and 30s are a time where you might find yourself getting into a serious relationship, welcoming a child into the world, or coping with the death of a loved one. These transitions often come with shifting family roles and expectations, which can make it difficult to maintain healthy boundaries with the people closest to you. That’s where I come in. As a therapist, I can help you to clarify, set, and navigate boundaries that support your personal growth, values, and the connections you have with others as well as navigate and identify strategies to cope with anxiety that comes up naturally during any transitional period in life. During our time together, we’ll identify the boundaries most important to you. We’ll also process feelings like guilt or shame that might come up around setting them and create strategies for communicating your needs effectively. My holistic, collaborative approach puts you in the driver's seat of your own treatment. Mental health isn’t a one-size-fits-all, so I provide personalized care that centers your unique needs and sense of agency. Going to therapy is vulnerable and brave, and I’m here to support you with whatever comes up in our space together.

I am particularly interested in working with diverse populations, including 1.5 and 2nd generation Asian Americans, BIPOC, and expats. As a native New Yorker and second generation Taiwanese-American, I’m especially attuned to issues of belonging and marginalization, and the complexities that arise from navigating intersecting identities and conflicting expectations, wants, and needs. I'M A FIRM BELIEVER in the health of one's mind being a crucial factor in their ability to meet the demands of everyday life. It becomes a harder task to address stressful situations if you're already not feeling well. Think about moments when you might not have been able to focus at work, successfully study for an exam, or even effectively communicate your concerns to others due to how you felt mentally and physically. MY WORK AS A THERAPIST ENTAILS consistent problem-solving, reasoning, exploring, investigating, learning, and healing. I provide compassionate, supportive, encouraging, and challenging therapy that facilitates and promotes growth for people who seek to improve the quality of their lives. Reflecting on one's actions, highlighting the importance of self-awareness, and offering advisement on ways to improve the overall health of one's lifestyle are a few ways by which I aid individuals in achieving an enhanced experience of life. THROUGH THESE MEANS, the ability to focus at work becomes a bit easier, studying for an exam is not such a harrowing feat and effectively expressing your needs feels like more of a natural practice. All the while, paying special attention to your improved health both mentally and physically.

Whatever led you to pursue therapy, it should feel like a safe environment where you are treated as the greatest expert of your own life experience. Therapy with me is a collaborative, relational process, where it is my goal to provide you with support and tools to navigate life's challenges. I have an eclectic therapy style, but primarily employ Internal Family Systems (IFS), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and psychodynamic theory to support our work. The process of finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming. My goal is to ensure that you have the best support you can get, wherever that may be.
